My Grandmother’s Ozark Star quilt

by Charles on February 25, 2012

I have 5 quilts that my grandmother made, but guess what?  She made me another quilt   (I do plan to eventually post similar photo shoots of the other quilts.)

She hand stitched the majority of this extremely awesome quilt. She only used her sewing machine for the stippling and part of the bias.  It took a little over a year, but that’s an estimate of when I recall that she started working on it.  Believe it or not, but the following may rival this in terms of coolness.

A bit of the back story.  I was attached to the University of Georgia Press for seven and a half years. During that time, they published a very nice book entitled Georgia Quilts. [Link to the UGA Press Georgia Quilts] I purchased a copy for my grandmother several years ago. (I eventually bought a copy for myself and my mother too.)

So here’s the coolest part: She made this quilt solely from the photo of the Ozark Star in the Georgia Quilts book.

I’m quilting again!

by Charles on January 20, 2012

I was put to shame when I visited my grandmother.  She’s been working on the most awesome quilt ever and will be giving it to me in the next few months.

I pulled my sewing machine back out and started working on my first quilt, which has been sitting idle for about 10 months.

I’ve reached the point where I am choosing a fabric for the back of the quilt and will soon begin assembling the actual quilt!

As a side project, I want to begin posting photos of the various quilts that my grandmother has given me.

Taking a break

March 15, 2011

I’m taking a quilting break for now to work on other projects.  I hope to get back into it in the next couple of weeks!

Block of Spools Experiment

February 5, 2011

After stitching the remaining 4 rows onto the Crazy Angles Quilt, I decided to try my hand at another random block.   I chose a block that came with the instructions for Marti Michell’s Perfect Patchwork Template set C: Spools. The four pieces diagonally from the center square resemble spools of thread. Each of the greens [...]

The Star Block

February 2, 2011

I decided to take a break from the quilt that I’m currently working on and experiment with a template set and same fabric I picked up on sale last month. This is not the start of a new quilt…at least I don’t think it is.  I used Marti Michell’s 45 degree diamond template set (E) [...]

Crazy Angle Quilt Sashing Continues

January 29, 2011

I changed my mind on which material to use in the sashing – no more dark blue. It’s now alternating blue, red, green, and white. I am continuing to stitch the sashing around the individual blocks.  This photo shows that 4 rows- with 6 blocks per row- have been completed  This represents a total of [...]

Crazy Angles Quilt Update

January 22, 2011

I have selected a fabric for the corner of the block border. I have a proposed border layout too.  The blue triangles matche the corners of each block’s border.

Second Quilt Mockup and Layout

January 15, 2011

When I’m working on any kind of project, I have to lay it out.  I can imagine how something looks, but I have to see it.   This goes for everything, including furniture rearrangement. So, even though I’m not finished with the blocks yet, I had to lay it out to see how it was coming [...]

Signing My Quilts

January 11, 2011

It occurred to me early on that I wanted a way to ‘sign’ my quilts.  I decided to try my hand at free motion sewing of my initials and the date. It’s kind of a sad attempt, but I think I might be able to pull this off with more practice!

Snow Day: More fabric cut

January 10, 2011

Aside from walking around outside in the snow today, I spent a lot of time stitching blocks and cutting even more material.  I still don’t have an actual plan formulated for this second quilt, but I feel one coming.  I like what I’m piecing together.  It’s lighter in color and sharp in angle- very different [...]
